The ranch was acquired in 2000 and is our goal to fulfill Camillus Nelson's and Lew Butler's intentions of making it available to the community. The ranch works with inter city youth and group homes to allow children to experience a working ranch, let them meet cowboys, cattle and have a hands on horse, habitat and farming and learning opportunity. Community projects would not be possible without the continued support of Rural Rap. Current Historic Nelson Ranch community projects include a group coming together as the "Garden Gals" collaborativly working with NRCS & RCD and an Organic master gardner to put in a community garden for clients of "No Barriers" a group working with about 50 adults with developmental disabilities to help integrate adults with developmental disabilities into the community to bridge the gap between home and the community. They have partnered to design a "Zen" garden and assisted with the soil, design and maintenance. There is also a horse project, where we bring together a bit of agriculture, animals and history for clients. The ranch has hosted International guests and groups visiting from abroad including and making agricultural relationships: Japan, Lithuania and Denmark. April 2007, we hosted the Governor of Siauliai, Lithuania and members of his deligation. They included members of his government and business leaders. Most of the members of delegation were members of the Siauliai Rotary Club. They were boought here in conjunction with the Yolo-Siaulia Sister County Project. They watched American cowboys roping and BBQ and even got to try their hand at roping. It was a fun time. May 2009, we are hosting the 32 graduating class members from Bygholm Agricultural College in Denmark. They are going to visit us on there international agricultural tour before their graduation. To learn about Bygholm Agricultural College check out there web site “www.bygholm.dk” Given our proximity to Sacramento, groups come out to see real "American Cowboys". People get to see cattle being doctored, ranch work, trick roping etc... Our cowboys even show guests how to handle a rope. It is our honor to provide these services and we never charge for it.
